1640-ական թվականներին  Իրենա Սենդլեր անունով այս կինը 2500 երեխաների ողջ-ողջ տեղավորել էր փոքրիկ արկղերի ու դագաղների մեջ, այդ ամենից տասնյակ տարիներ անց նա ստացավ հերոսի կոչում։

Երբ Եվրոպայում սկսվեց հակահրեական տրամադրություններ տիրել, Իրենան աշխատանքի անցավ մի կազմակերպությունում, որի նպատակն էր օգնել հրեա երեխաներին։

Իրենան աշխատելով այդ ճամբարում՝ վտանգելով իր կյանքը, որոշում է կայացնում գաղտնի կերպով օգնել ճամբար ուղարկված հրեա երեխաներին, փախչել այնտեղից, հակառակ դեպքում բոլոր երեխաները սպանվելու էին գերմանական զինվորիների կողմից։

Նա մանկահասակ երեխաներին քնաբեր էր տալիս և տեղավորում փոքր արկղերում կամ դագաղներում, որոնց վրա նախապես անցքեր էր անում, որպեսզի երեխաները չխեղդվեն։ Նրանց տարածքից դուրս էին հանում մեքենաներով, որոնք ճամբար ախտահանող նյութեր էին բերում։ Փախուստի համար օգտագործվում էին նաև ջրատարները։

Իրենա Սենդլերը բոլոր փրկված երեխաների տվյալները գրում է թղթի վրա և պահում ապակե շշում։ Շիշը թաղվում է ընկերուհու բակի խնձորենու տակ։ Նպատակը պատերազմից հետո երեխաների հարազատներին գտնելն էր:

1943 թվականի հոկտեմբերի 20-ին Իրենա Սենդլերը անստորագիր հայտով ձերբակալվեց։ Տանջանքներից հետո նրան դատապարտեցին մահվան, սակայն նա փրկվեց՝ մահապատժի վայր ուղեկցող պահակները կաշառված էին և կեղծեցին նրա մահը։ Իրենան փաստաթղթերով մահապատժի էր ենթարկվել և սպանվել, բայց իրականում ընդհատակյա կյանք էր վարում և օգնում փրկված հրեա երեխաներին։
