Մոնթե Մելքոնյանի ծննդյան օրն է այսօր

Մոնթեն ծնվել է 1957 թվականին Մեծ Եղեռնից փրկված և ԱՄՆ Կալիֆոռնիայի Վայսեյլի ավանում հանգրվանած հայի ընտանիքում։

Իր ողջ գիտակից կյանքում նա պայքարել է հայերի իրավունքների, հայոց ցեղասպանության ճանաչման և մեր հայրենիքի վերատիրման համար: 22 տարեկանում արդեն լիովին տիրապետում էր անգլերենին, ֆրանսերենին, իսպաներենին, իտալերենին, թուրքերենին, պարսկերենին, ճապոներենին, քրդերենին։

1980 թ.-ից անդամագրվելով Հայաստանի ազատագրության հայ գաղտնի բանակին՝ կարճ ժամանակում դարձել է նրա ղեկավարներից մեկը։ 1981 թ.-ի նոյեմբերի 11-ին Ֆրանսիայի Օռլի օդանավակայանում Մոնթեն ձերբակալվել է կեղծ անձնագիր և ատրճանակ կրելու մեղադրանքով։

Նա սկզբում դատապարտվել է 4 ամսվա ազատազրկման, իսկ ավելի ուշ դատարանը որոշել է վտարել նրան Ֆրանսիայից։ Դատարանում Մոնթեն հայտարարել է. «Բոլոր հայերը կեղծ անձնագրեր են կրում՝ ֆրանսիական, ամերիկյան, դրանք կեղծ կլինեն այնքան ժամանակ, քանի դեռ հայկական չեն...»։ 1985 թ.-ին նա նորից կեղծ անձնագրով ժամանել է Ֆրանսիա և մի քանի ամիս անց նորից ձերբակալվել «ահաբեկչություն» կազմակերպելու մեղադրանքով։ Մոնթեն բանտից դուրս է եկել 1989 թ.-ի հունվարի 16-ին։

1991 թ.-ին նա գալիս է Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, որտեղ արդեն սկսվել էին հայ-ադրբեջանական զինված ընդհարումները։ Նույն թվականի սեպտեմբերին մեկնում է Արցախի Հանրապետություն, որտեղ նրան անվանակոչում են Ավո մականունով։ Ռազմական տեսանկյունից մասնագիտական բարձր հմտություններ ցուցաբերելու շնորհիվ 1992 թ.-ին ստանձնում է Մարտունու պաշտպանական շրջանի շտաբի պետի պարտականությունը։ Այստեղ կարճ ժամանակում իր անկեղծությամբ ու մաքրությամբ նա շահեց ոչ միայն տեղի բնակչության, այլև ընդհանրապես, համայն հայության սերն ու հարգանքը։ Նրա ղեկավարությամբ Մարտունին դարձավ Արցախի ամենապաշտպանված ու ամենամարտունակ շրջանը։ 1993 թ.-ի մարտ-ապրիլ ամիսներին նրա ղեկավարությամբ ազատագրվեց նաև Քարվաճառը:

Մոնթեն սպանվել է 1993 թ.-ի հունիսի 12-ին ադրբեջանական զրահամեքենայի կրակոցից, երբ հետախուզության նպատակով մարտընկերների հետ այցելել է Աղդամի շրջանի Մարզիլի գյուղի մատույցներ։

Մոնթեի հիշատակին գրվել և կատարվել են երգեր, նկարահանվել բազմաթիվ վավերագրական ֆիլմեր: Նրա անունով է կոչվում ՀՀ զինված ուժերի ռազմական ուսումնարաններից մեկը, փողոցներ և ուսումնական այլ հաստատություններ կան Հայաստանում և Արցախում, իսկ Մարտունի քաղաքում վեր է խոյանում լեգենդար հրամանատարի արձանը, որտեղ ամեն տարի նորակոչիկները երդում են տալիս Մոնթեի գործը շարունակելու վճռականությամբ:
