Կանադացի գիտնականները խոշոր առաջընթաց են գրանցել արևային էներգիայի տեխնոլոգիաներում՝ ստեղծելով նոր նյութ, որը կարողանում է արևի լույսն անմիջապես վերածել ջերմության՝ աննախադեպ արդյունավետությամբ: Այն բաղկացած է տիտանի օքսիդի հատուկ փուլի բարակ թաղանթներից և կարող է հանգեցնել էներգաարդյունավետ շենքերի, կայուն վառելիքի արտադրության և ջրի մաքրման նոր տեխնոլոգիաների՝ առանց արևի լույսից բացի այլ էլեկտրաէներգիայի աղբյուրների կարիքի։

Ավանդական մեթոդները տիտանի օքսիդի արտադրության հետ կապված դժվարություններ ունեն։ Այս նյութը պատկանում է «Մագնելիի փուլեր» կոչվող խմբին՝ տիտանի օքսիդի ենթաստոյխիոմետրիկ ձևերին, որոնք ունեն եզակի էլեկտրական և քիմիական հատկություններ։ Չնայած դրա պոտենցիալը ճանաչված է, գործնական կիրառման հարցում խոչընդոտներ կան։ Օրինակ՝ փոշենման ձևով ջերմային վերականգնման մեթոդները սովորաբար չեն կարողանում սինթեզել օքսիդի մաքուր փուլը և չեն ապահովում դրա կազմի, ձևաբանության ու նանոկառուցվածքի ճշգրիտ վերահսկողություն՝ սահմանափակելով նյութի հնարավորությունները, մասնավորապես՝ էլեկտրահաղորդականությունը։

Այս սահմանափակումները հաղթահարելու համար Կանադայի Ազգային գիտահետազոտական ինստիտուտի (INRS) գիտնականներն օգտագործել են մագնետրոնային ատոմիզացիա՝ կիսահաղորդչային արդյունաբերությունում լայնորեն կիրառվող բարակ թաղանթների նստեցման մեթոդ։ Մի քանի հարյուր նանոմետր հաստությամբ օքսիդի շերտը նստեցվել է տարբեր ենթաշերտերի (մետաղ, սիլիկոն, ապակի) վրա՝ փոխելով դրանց մակերեսի հատկությունները։

Նյութի կոռոզիակայունությունը և բարձր էլեկտրահաղորդականությունը հարմար են դարձնում ջրից կայուն աղտոտիչները հեռացնելու բարձրարդյունավետ անոդներ ստեղծելու համար։ Բացի այդ, այն կարող է օգտագործվել ջրածնի և ամոնիակի արտադրության մեջ։ INRS-ի հաղորդագրության մեջ նշվում է. «Այս ծածկույթի արտառոց ֆոտոթերմային փոխակերպման ունակությունը հեռանկարային է նաև «խելացի» տաքացվող պատուհանների արտադրության համար, ինչը էական առավելություն է էներգախնայողության տեսանկյունից»:
