Հրայր Կամենդատյանը ֆեյսբուքյան իր էջում գրում է․

Ինչու են մարդիկ սկսում թմրանյութեր օգտագործել: Ի՞նչն է նրանց դրդում գնալ այս քայլին։ Այս հարցերին պատասխանելու համար 2014 թվականի փետրվար-մարտ ամիսներին անցկացվել է անանուն հարցում, որին մասնակցել է թմրանյութ օգտագործող 157 բանտարկյալ։
Հայաստանի Առողջապահության ազգային ինստիտուտի թմրամոլների և թմրամոլների մոնիթորինգի ղեկավար Սուրեն Նազինյանն ասաց, որ ընդունված մեթոդաբանության համաձայն թմրամիջոցների օգտագործման պատճառները բաժանվում են երեք հիմնական խմբի, որոնցից երկուսը նույնպես ունեն ենթախմբեր։

1. Անձնական կամ անհատական խնդիրներ և կարիքներ.

Ա. Հաճույք ստանալու խթան (երբ մարդիկ հաճույքի համար թմրանյութեր են օգտագործում);

բ. Վերացնել բացասական հույզերը, որոնք կապված են տհաճ իրադարձությունների հետ.

Գ. Ակտիվացնել վարքային դրսևորումները կամ խթանել մոտիվացիան.

2. Սոցիալական և հոգեբանական դրդապատճառներ.

Ա. Ավանդույթներ (կան երկրներ և հասարակություններ, որտեղ թմրանյութերի օգտագործումը ավանդույթ է, օրինակ՝ ինչ-որ արարողության մաս);

բ. Ենթարկվող մոտիվացիա (թմրամիջոցների օգտագործումը այլ մարդկանց ճնշման տակ կամ այլ մարդկանց նմանվելու ցանկության պատճառով);

Գ. Պսեւդոմշակույթ (տարբեր ենթամշակույթների թելադրանքով թմրամիջոցների օգտագործումը).
 
3. Պաթոլոգիական խթաններ.

Ըստ ընդունված մեթոդաբանության՝ հիմնական պատճառները վերը թվարկվածներն են։ Հայաստանում անցկացված հետազոտությունը ցույց է տվել, որ թմրանյութ օգտագործելու ամենատարածված պատճառը երկրում անձնական խնդիրներն են, այսինքն՝ մարդիկ ցանկանում են զվարճանալ կամ թուլացնել հուզական փորձը, ազատվել բացասական հույզերից), իսկ սոցիալ-հոգեբանական դրդապատճառները (մյուսներին նմանվելու, մշակութային որոշ պահանջներին հետևելու ցանկություն և այլն) զբաղեցնում են երկրորդ տեղը։
