Այն բանից հետո, երբ Վենեսուելայի Կենտրոնական ընտրական հանձնաժողովը երկուշաբթի գիշերը գործող նախագահ Նիկոլաս Մադուրոյին հայտարարել է ընտրությունների հաղթող, հազարավոր ընդդիմադիրներ դուրս են եկել մայրաքաղաք Կարակասի և այլ քաղաքների փողոցներ՝ բողոքելու: Տեղի են ունեցել բախումներ ոստիկանների և զինվորականների հետ։

Հազարավոր ցուցարարներ ոտքով երթի են ելել, ոմանք՝ անցել են բազմաթիվ կիլոմետրեր, դեպի կենտրոն և նախագահական պալատ: Փողոցներում այրվել են մեքենաներ, անվադողեր, աղբ։ Բախումներ են տեղի ունեցել ցուցարարների և զինված ոստիկանների միջև։

Ոստիկանությունն ու զինվորականները փակել են նախագահականի շրջակայքի փողոցները և կիրառել ռետինե փամփուշտներ, արցունքաբեր գազ։ Ցուցարարները պատասխանել են` քարեր և դյուրավառ նյութեր նետելով: Ցուցարարները վանկարկել են «Ազատությո՛ւն» և «Այս կառավարությունը կընկնի՛» արտահայտությունները, պոկել և այրել Մադուրոյի՝ պատերից ու սյուներից կախված դիմանկարները։

Վենեսուելայի Ազգային ընտրական խորհրդի տվյալների համաձայն՝ գործող նախագահը հավաքել է ձայների 51,2%-ը, իսկ միասնական ընդդիմության թեկնածու Էդմունդո Գոնսալեսը՝ 44%-ը։ Սակայն անկախ էքզիթ փոլերը ցույց են տվել, որ Գոնսալեսի օգտին քվեարկել է ընտրողների մոտ 65%-ը, իսկ Մադուրոյի օգտին՝ 14%-31%-ը:

Ընդդիմության առաջնորդ Մարիա Կորինա Մաչադոն երկուշաբթի լրագրողներին ասել է, որ վերահաշվարկը, որն ընդդիմությունն անցկացնում է ինքնուրույն, ցույց է տալիս Գոնսալեսի ջախջախիչ հաղթանակը: Նրա խոսքով՝ Գոնսալեսը հավաքել է 6,27 միլիոն ձայն, իսկ Մադուրոն՝ ընդամենը 2,75 միլիոն։  Մաչադոն պարզաբանել է, որ ընդդիմությունը ընտրատեղամասերից ունի արձանագրությունների 73%-ի պատճենները։
